After my father, Paul, had a stroke, in the summer of 1979, when I was 20 years old, an ER doctor told my stepmother, Sue, and me that he almost certainly wouldn’t survive.
Josh! This was so unexpected and beautiful—thank you for these two, wonderful stories and the message of hope in the midst of inner terror. You are a treasure. Sending much warmth to you and Sara. May our tomorrow be the fulfillment of the best in our people.
Thanks for that encouragement, Josh! No matter the outcome of this election, I take great comfort in realizing we all don’t just go “poof!” Communities of amazing humans like this one continue no matter what - HOWEVER I’ll be doing some phone banking today and I’ve been wearing my Cat Lady for Kamala T-shirt daily for weeks……stay strong, Folks! Good luck to us!
Thank you, Josh. As the saying goes, you "have a way with words."
and if you didn't hear it this morning, Your Call, Rose Aguilar on KALW had a guest with really good news about new voters in swing states concerned about environment .
Like so many others I have experienced a vast emotional range between hope and despair over the past few weeks as bits of news leak out about the election. Right now I am very encouraged. But, it will be another couple of days at least before we will have a good idea about the results, I hate to even consider the possibility that a man as worthless as DJT could actually be reelected. But even if the electorate come through, our Country faces many challenges that will outlive us. We must work hard now so that those who follow us will have a decent world to live in.
Absolutely! Thank you for this poignant story and the call for courage and fortitude. This quote from Rebecca Solnit came in yesterday in a message from Flip the Vote.
“To hope is to gamble. It's to bet on your futures, on your desires, on the possibility that an open heart and uncertainty is better than gloom and safety. To hope is dangerous, and yet it is the opposite of fear, for to live is to risk.”
Lovely story. Sending love and support to all in this fraught moment. May we get through this with our democracy, imperfect though it is, still chugging along.

You had me worried--I thought BEFORE and AFTER were all about you.
I don't think the election will be as close as the polls. Nor do I think things can get as bad as feared.

Thank you with a lot of worry and even more hope.
Thanks for this Josh. Right there with you in hope.
I've been praying , and I don't believe in god. We will prevail! Thanks for another moving piece of writing, Josh.

Beautiful words on this pre-Election day. Thank you Josh.
Saw this from an Internet podcaster, who said she's feeling "nauseously optimistic."
