Yes, you could run a marathon! My husbands father, whose only exercise was walking the dog, decided at 64 that he wanted to start exercising instead of going downhill year after year. He started running and improved enough over several years to run the New York, Boston, and Berlin marathons. It can be done! (But after you’re eating solid foods) Let us know.

That is inspiring! I ran my first - and probably last - marathon at the age of 43, ten years ago. I'll be happy just to work back up to the half-marathon distance again.

Good luck, Josh. I got my rude awakening a few years ago when informed that I was pre diabetic. As one who has always had a reasonably healthy life style, I was shocked to imagine myself as a diabetic. Since then I have changed my diet after much reading and found that I can actually enjoy my new foods (predominantly vegetarian) and no longer crave some of the things that used to be mainstays in my meals. I had to learn how to cook differently, using many new foods and spices, so that I really enjoy my new diet and do not feel that I am making any sacrifices. I’m sure that if I didn’t really like what I’m eating, I would eventually slip back into my old patterns.

John, I too was jolted when I recently was told by my doctor that I was pre-diabetic. I'm hoping that this diet - which will eventually transition to the kinds of healthy foods that you're now eating - will bring me back into normal range. Thanks so much for your support!

If things don't change with 960 cal/day they never will. I hope it works!

Thanks, Bruce!! I've already lost a few pounds, even since I started the diet on Friday -- still many, many to go, however!

Hey Josh! Seems to me that deciding to begin and beginning can be the biggest steps. Congratulations on achieving such. and may continuing days and weeks bring positive results, leading to positive feedback loop in your body and psyche (but no feedback in your mics)

Best of luck reaching your health goals. As someone who has gained and lost significant amounts of weight more than once over the last 30 years, I know that weight management is an emotionally loaded subject.

I'm currently on a diet myself, though very different from yours (I won't go into the details here). I'm also working with a physical therapist in the hopes that I can begin running again soon, as training for races was the only way I was able to keep a stable, healthy weight in the past. Of course, every body is different and your mileage may vary (pun intended).

Let's compare notes in 30 weeks! I didn't take a "before" photo, but probably would have looked just as grumpy if I had, lol.

A person close to me did a non-Kaiser version of this program. Sounds the same, except yours goes for ~ 4 months which may be all most ppl can tolerate before beginning the transition. FWIW, my person did great for 6 months, shedding 110# and going from a BMI of >40 to 27.9. No loss of strength as far as I could tell. They looked slimmer, sleeker and a bit older. I had hoped they’d get to 25. Their downfall was going on vacation -which the program strongly advises against. After the first restaurant meal in ____, they bagged the packs and that was all she wrote. Now, years later, they’re maintaining at BMI ~35. I hope you keep your eyes on the prize and get to your goal. It’s the visceral fat that’ll do you in.

Thank you, Nette!! The Kaiser program folks said that they've learned, over the many years they've been doing this program with lots of participants, that after 16-18 weeks people's bodies start to adapt to the all-liquid, 960-calorie diet in ways that severely slow down the weight-loss. So counterintuitively, people have more success continuing the diet at that point when they start eating real food again, and take in more calories. ... And yes, I'm definitely keeping in mind that when the diet is officially over, I'll have to be _really_ careful about backsliding into my old eating habits.

Oh, gosh - I cooked for a family for over 20 years, and it is not my favorite thing to do. It was nice to have mealtime together, but now I prefer to nibble in front of the Netflix series I'm in to. Prepared food and power drinks are fine for me - and as a vegan, offer good variety. It sounds like you are on track! Best Wishes!
