Oh, Josh! I love this! It’s ironic in a way. I was woken up with the tap tap tap of what sounded like a woodpecker. I had one make a hole in the aluminum siding of my condo one year. The tapping was from nearby roof replacement. It’s a beautiful day and will hit 90 later. They started about 7:30. At first, I thought “come on, guys, really it’s only 7:30!” For safety reasons, I’m glad they’re getting an early start.

Loved your tour of my old haunts of The Presidio and Crissy Field. Thank you!

Glad to find your substack, Josh. I'm up in Humboldt now where we've had a snowy owl and a great grey owl show up in the redwood forest a few years ago. I didn't join the car traffic up to Redwood National and State Parks to see them but it was nice to know we had feathered tourists to our tall trees.

Exciting! I need to get back out to Crissy Field soon. I used to go running there frequently.

We are just back from Point Reyes and Drakes Beach, where we did birdwatching and a book talk with Keith Hansen. There were great birds to see, but all talk was of the red headed woodpecker. Thanks for the photo and post. It really resonated. We have picked up birdwatching in retirement as we can go more places early in the morning— and yes it is bittersweet and comforting as you say, some as newly minted seniors, we are starting to face more losses of loved ones. Bird watching is best when shared with others as in Do you see what I see? You articulated our feelings just home from our trip so beautifully and made us laugh and sigh! Blessings on your head!

Very nice photos! I saw a red headed woodpecker in May in Ohio, where they are supposed to be, but not that easy to see. …I like to call elegant terns Elvis terns.

Hi Josh, such a great show yesterday and now this sweet story! Yay. Really love Sara's pictures. BTW, my husband wasn't feeling well to join me yesterday at the Marsh so I contacted a friend, who also couldn't make it. But she said something I thought you'd find amusing - something about finding you funny, "Cornbooth comes to mind, but that's not it...." I didn't correct her, "that's with a "K"...ha!

Nice bird adventure. I will have to get my bicycle back on the road to get reacquainted with Golden Gate Park. Too many familiar roadways are no longer open to cars.

As for Google Maps, I use Reagan's phrase: "trust but verify" before blindly following its paths anywhere.
