Lovely spot. Have hiked, swum, and paddle boarded there, before I started birding. Must go there soon again! Nice story and pictures!

Josh, I just heard a Pileated calling. Plenty of them around here, but it always seems special to hear and see them. Wish you were here!

If you'd found an Ivory Bill woodpecker that would be truly amazing, for many reasons.....

Wonderful story Josh. I can identify with the early mornings and outdoor relief having communed with nature in forests and snow when younger.

Sara, you take great photos. Takes a lot of patience and very steady hands on long lenses to get great focus. Thank you both.

So, among other things, you’re a recovering copy editor! You’ve had an interesting life I say.

As Woody Woodpecker was introduced in 1940, the bird you saw that inspired him was at least 83 years old! (Much older than that species’s usual 12-year life span. Perhaps its Pilates regime accounts for this.)

Loved this story, and so identified the the pre-trip conditions, which weren't met but were then overcome with the natural beauty of your day. I need to learn about birds. I am fascinated by bird watchers, they literally silently gasp when they make a hoped for sighting.

Great story and photos. And I can very much relate to the reluctance to use park restrooms. I can also relate to being neither an early-riser nor night-owl, and needing more afternoon naps as I age!

Loved the bird pictures, and the tail of the reluctant birder.
