This just knocked me out. The zoomed in photos and deeply particular observations reassure me that the world of birds (and by implication many other worlds) is A L I V E! Just what we need.
Very nifty pics! We had a backyard koi pond in Berkeley. We were gobsmacked one day to see
a magnificent heron feasting on our koi. We were awed by its beauty, such that it took us a while to realize what s/he was eating! (Rather than using violence in defense, we deployed netting over the pond.) Gawd, what a magnificent site that bird was, though.
I'm assuming your birding spot of choice this time was, let's just say, down by the water? If so, I am pleasantly surprised that the kites are back because I spoke to a woman who knew about them when we were down there. She said that for two seasons the crows had either pestered them enough or forced the babies out of the nest too early, and she hadn't seen any this year. I'm glad that they are back!
Fantastic pictures, Sara! Glad to be reading your posts again, Josh! I used to get reminder emails about them, something has changed. I realize I CAN just go to substack and there they are! Hope to be in touch soon, Sara from RTSO

I’m in the Galapagos with an ornithologist on board. All wild and amazing. You must see for yourself.

The Fifth Dimension, the Byrds, the Mamas and the Papas--I'm having flashbacks!
