So good Josh! Another beautiful one. Your stories have the rare quality to evoke deep personal memories, even when what you describe happens to be so distinct than my own experiences.

So many of us are children of divorce. Mine didn't split up until I was in high school, but they argued as far back as I can remember. I have a memory of hiding under a chair as a young child while they were yelling at each other...

I'm glad that when I went through my own divorce from my first husband, it was reasonably cordial, and we had no kids to experience that kind of trauma.

Pax, what you went through as a child sounds absolutely horrifying!! Our parents loom so huge in our young lives (and often in our old lives as well!), and it can rip us apart emotionally when they go at each other.

Thanks Josh. I honestly think it would have been better for all concerned if they had split up sooner though. It was clearly an unhappy marriage.

ETA: Though as your post demonstrated, splitting up doesn't necessarily end the arguing...

Keep on the diet and keep on writing. Your memories are sweet and not sappy. Thanks for sharing them with us, Josh.

Thank you for another beautiful chapter of this story. I recently started working in New York and walking the city is a singular joy, filled with wonder and heartbreak.

So touching, Josh. I've just spent another holiday remembering how critical and challenging Christmas was to our struggling family. Thanks for sharing your memories....
