Bravo, Josh. There are few things more challenging (or rewarding) than playing outside our comfort zones. I started doing collage when I was 85, and last year, just before my 90th birthday, I published a book of poems. Never had done either of those things when I was younger.
You may find at the end of this time that you have to re-introduce yourself to Sarah and your son.
Another well written essay. Glad you were able to get started on the drawing (and even share it with all of us). The process is more important than the product so now you're on your way. Bravo!!
Yay! Your comments on your drawings are so write/right on! (I used to teach: Finding the Artist Within, aiming to excite creative process in those who'd been shut down.) And I'd like to pass on to you what my drawing teacher at Cal said to me as he went around the room to each of us students: nothing. He said nothing at all, just beamed a huge smile at me. So here's that beaming smile, Josh.
Meanwhile, I had a dream about YOU last night. I don't remember it at all. But I woke up with the feeling/hope that your next monologue will be about your Liquid Diet experience and the entire gestalt of your experiences thru it. Have fun!
Josh, as a first step you might consider an adult coloring book, where you don't have to worry about shapes, just colors (and staying between the lines!)
I like your drawings too, Josh. The second one, with all the colors and lines is a bit Van Goghish--not a bad start. Keep going. And looking closely at what you are drawing is half the battle. Took me years to learn that.
I'm impressed that you're drawing on actual paper! I dabbled in drawing on my iPad Mini for a bit a year or so ago, and might return to it at some point. But like you, I tend to get frustrated quickly with my lack of skill, and retreat to my comfort zone (in my case, video games!)
Really nice drawings, Josh! BTW, any attempts at playing your oboe these days, or would that just be too much with your drawing and the challenging diet? I find that even a 15 minute effort, don't forget to set the timer, daily, gets things happening - no expectation, just pure robot while trying to get back in touch. Otherwise, it's really fantastic that you're sharing your diet progress, many thanks for taking us on the journey! Cheers, Sara from the RTSO

Yay, you! So much bravery there! No art crimes committed. Just bold experiments in expanding your creativity. 👍🏻👍🏻

That's a great idea, Craig!!

how many times in dreamworld I have discovered a lit cigarette in my hand (quit cold turkey in 1994!)….!
hang in there, the subconscious shall provide metaphysical pastrami sandwiches when needed ❤️.
I like your drawings!
Wow -- thank you, Alex!!
